January 19th – A pregnant woman in Bulgaria gave birth to a baby with COVID-19 antibodies, according to the comprehensive Russian Satellite News Agency and Bulgarian State Radio on the 19th.

A 28-year-old woman from the Bulgarian city of Pazardzhik was reportedly diagnosed with the novel coronavirus after being hospitalized with fever and cough during pregnancy.

Because the virus causes placental lesions and slows down the development of the fetus, doctors decided to have a Caesarean section.

Eventually, the woman gave birth to a 2.75 kg and 46 cm long baby boy.

After testing, it was found that the baby boy had coronavirus antibodies. At present, the baby is in good health and will be discharged from the hospital with his mother.

In November 2020, a study conducted in Singapore found that all five pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19 gave birth to their own antibodies to COVID-19.

Anna Simakova, chief infectious disease expert of the Ministry of Health of the Krai of the Russian Federation, said that no direct route of transmission of the novel coronavirus from mother to the fetus has been confirmed.

Antibodies present in the mother are passed on to the child at birth and will exist in the child for one year.
