May 6 – OnĀ the evening of April 30th local time, Yan Zhiwen Yan, a Chinese takeaway in the United States, was shot dead while delivering food on his way to delivering food in Queens, New York.

On May 5, Eva Zhao, Yan Zhiwen’s wife, choked in an interview with the American Chinese website that her husband was often robbed of food on the way to work, and the takeaway truck had been stolen several times.

Recalling her last meeting with her husband, she said, “I hope time can turn back.”

Eva Zhao said that her husband worked very hard. He worked from 7 a.m. to 22 o’clock every day for seven days. Originally, he wanted to work a few more years to save a tuition for his two children who were about to go to college.

She also said that she hoped that her family could accompany her in the United States as soon as possible, and that the local government department would help solve her identity and visa problems.

Yan Zhiwen, 45 years old, from Fujian, China, emigrated to the United States from China more than 20 years ago. Before the shooting, he worked in a Chinese restaurant called “Great Wall” in Queens, New York, delivering takeout for restaurants. His wife Eva Zhao works in a dry cleaner. They have three children, 2 years old, 12 years old and 14 years old.

At about 21:34 on April 30, Yan Zhiwen was shot in the chest during the delivery. He lost consciousness and died shortly after being sent to the hospital.

After the incident, New York City Congressman Lynn Schulman issued a statement condemning the murder, saying, “This incident has had an impact on our community because it is recognized as one of the safest places in Queens.” And gun violence has become an ‘epidemic’ in our country, which will happen in every corner.

According to U.S. media, racist attacks in the Asian community in New York City have risen sharply since the beginning of the epidemic, up 356% in 2021 compared with 2020.

In the past two years, many innocent Asians have been harassed, injured and even killed. Some experts said that there may be “serious underreporting” of such crimes.
