More than 20% of Colombia’s prisons are overcrowded and plan to invest 244 billion pesos for expansion

It is reported that 183 billion pesos of this fund will be allocated to Magdalena Province to expand its largest local prison, San Angel Prison. The 184-hectare expansion of the prison began before investment was obtained.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in November 2022, when the prison’s capacity will increase by about 1,500 people.
The remaining 61 billion pesos will be invested in the cities of Balanquia, Cartagena and Santa Marta.
It is expected that 510 new prisons will be built in each city, with a total of 1,530 new prisons in the country.
Aurejuela stressed that official data show that 21% of the country’s prisons are currently overloaded, and the addition of prisons will help greatly alleviate the overcrowding of prisons in the country.
