The European Court of Justice ruled on the 10th that from 2008 to 2017, Italy systematically and continuously violated EU regulations on the concentration of PM10 particles in the air.
Moreover, Italy has not taken appropriate measures in time to ensure that the air quality meets the standards set by the European Union.
Regarding Italy’s proposal that air pollution has not spread to the whole country, only certain areas such as the Po River Plain have excessive air quality.
The European Court of Justice did not accept it and believes that even if only one area has excessive PM10 particulate matter, it can be judged as a violation of air quality standards.
Due to excessive PM10 particulate matter, the European Commission sued Italy, Hungary and Romania to the European Court of Justice in May 2018. In March 2019, Italy was again sued to the European Court of Justice because of excessive nitrogen dioxide.
