A 24-year-old woman who set herself on fire outside India’s Supreme Court with friends last week died of burns on Tuesday, the Indian Express reported Friday. The 27-year-old man who set himself on fire with the woman, a graduate of delhi University, died on Saturday.
Reported that the woman is a student in Ghazpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the two arrived in Delhi on August 16. Before setting themselves on fire, the two also streamed a video live on the social platform Facebook.
The woman mentioned in the broadcast that she had previously made rape allegations against Atul Rai, a senator from India’s Popular Socialist Party, and accused senior officials of the Indian Federal Police (IPS) and a judge in Uttar Pradesh of “collusion” with the senator.
After setting herself on fire during the live broadcast, the woman suffered burns of 85 per cent of her body and the man 65 per cent of her body.
A senior official at Delhi’s RML Hospital, which treated the pair, said: “The day they were sent, we operated on them, but the burns were severe and treatment was difficult. Organ failure has occurred. ”
Senator Rai is understood to be accused of raping the woman in March 2018.
In a legal filing filed may 1, 2019, the woman said she met the senator while running for the student union election and sought financial help from him.
According to the woman, on March 7, 2018, Rai called her to her apartment in Varanasi and sexually assaulted her. She also claimed that Rai had filmed the rape and threatened to spread the video on social media.
On 22 June 2019, Rai turned himself in in court and was placed in judicial custody. He is still in prison. As a senator, Rai fought in prison and won local council elections. It is reported that the case is pending in the Balagra Local Court.
On the other hand, in November last year, Rai’s brother, Pawan Kumar, reported the woman’s forgery in Varanasi.
He claims that when the woman sued a student leader in 2015 on sexual harassment charges, she submitted her high school transcript to the police, which showed her date of birth as March 10, 1997.
But when the woman filed a lawsuit against Senator Rai in 2019, the documents show her date of birth was June 10, 1997, according to the complaint.
Eventually, the local court brought a lawsuit against the woman for forgery.
“The MP and his colleagues have been harassing her since 2019,” said the self-immolation woman’s parents.
They want us to drop the case, but we didn’t. They were holding videos that threatened us, but my daughter said she was going to fight…
My daughter never escaped… I don’t know why they issued her with an arrest warrant for bail. She felt depressed and disappointed.
I hope that the Government will crack up on the police involved. My daughter was harassed and tortured. We want to know more. ”
