A man and a woman were burned when a suspect spilled a suspected sulphuric acid liquid on a Tokyo subway station on the opening night of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, police said, Kyodo News reported Friday. The suspects escaped despite increased security at the metro station.
The attack occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at the Tokyo Metro’s Platinum High Wheel subway station in Tokyo’s port district, where a 22-year-old man suffered burns to his face and shoulders and a 34-year-old woman to her legs, the report said.
Police said both victims were later taken to hospital, both conscious, with serious injuries to men and minor injuries to women. Police also said that after the attack, the victim told witnesses that his eyes were out of sight, while the woman said the body part of the injury felt very hot.
It is reported that the suspect is about 175 cm tall, aged between 30 and 50 years old, wearing black clothing, wearing a mask.
Metro operators and law enforcement say the suspect threw sulphuric acid at the man as he approached him from the right. The victim slipped and was burned as she spilled liquid on the floor.
Reported that after the attack near the upscale residential area, the police sealed off the entrance to the subway station, many police officers on alert.
