CHICAGO, May 17 2021 At least 48 people, including two police officers, were shot and at least five of them were killed in multiple shootings in Chicago over the weekend, the Chicago Police Department said Thursday.
Chicago police said six teenagers under the age of 17, including a 2-year-old girl, were among the injured, ABC News reported Thursday. In addition, two police officers were shot and wounded in the line of duty and are being treated in hospital.
Chicago Police Chief David Brown said at a news conference Thursday that it was the 29th time this year that Chicago police officers had been shot.
The city had 865 shootings in the first three months of 2021, up 33 percent from the same period in 2020, and 195 murders, up 22 percent from the same period in 2020, according to a new Chicago Police Department report released May 2.
