May 10th 2021, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Khatibzad strongly condemned the impact on the Iranian Consulate General in Karbala, Iraq, saying that it is the international obligation of the Iraqi government to safeguard the security of diplomatic institutions, and urged the relevant agencies of the Iraqi government to take security measures to ensure the security of Iranian diplomatic institutions.
Khatibzad said he hopes the Iraqi government will fully fulfill its responsibilities and obligations in protecting Iranian foreign ministry institutions within the framework of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
He also revealed that the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has written to the Iraqi Embassy in Iran on the evening of the 9th to protest.
