May 3, local time, the U.N. Security Council issued a statement strongly condemning the April 30 suicide attack in Pul Alam, the capital of Afghanistan’s Logar province.
The statement expressed its deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Afghanistan and expressed the hope that the injured would recover soon.
The Council expresses its deep concern at the continuing violence and the security situation in Afghanistan, in particular the civilian casualties, and stresses the importance of efforts to end the violence and protect civilians.
Furthermore, the members of the Council reaffirm that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. Responsibility for the planning, financing, organization, support and execution of the attackers must be held accountable and all States must be urged to cooperate with the Government of Afghanistan, among others, in accordance with international law and Security Council resolutions.
The Council reiterates that any act of terrorism, regardless of motive, time, place or attacker, is an unjustified criminal act. States should use all means to combat the threat to international peace and security posed by terrorist acts.
At least 21 people were reportedly killed and more than 100 injured in a suicide attack in Afghanistan’s Logar province on April 30.
