The death of Daunte Wright, an African-American man from Minnesota, by police on May 2, local time, reignited demonstrations, according to U.S. media reports. Hundreds of demonstrators marched around the Brooklyn center where the crime took place, chanting the name of Dante Wright, spelling it out with car air fresheners, calling for reform of the police system and tougher charges against kimberly Potter, a former police officer involved.
At one point, the demonstrations caused traffic disruption and many roadblocks and fences were erected around the police station. The mother of the victim, Wright, said protesters would continue to call for justice on the streets, on social media and at the scene of the crime, saying the victims “will never get justice” but wanted “100 per cent accountability.”
Porter, a former police officer, is understood to have been charged with second-degree manslaughter and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine if convicted. Porter made his first court appearance via video on April 15 and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 17.
