April 25th 2021 more than a dozen ships lined up near the U.S. Embassy in Havana’s Seafront Boulevard to protest against the lifting of the decades-old U.S. economic and trade embargo against Cuba.
The protest flotilla, carrying Cuban flags and banners reading “Unseal the embargo against Cuba”, passed the United States Embassy in Cuba. A large number of Cubans gathered on the shore, holding flags and expressing their support for the flotilla.
Lola Garcia, a havana resident: “We are fighting for Freedom in Cuba, we are fighting for the lifting of the embargo, and what the United States has done to Cuba is unjust.”
Havana resident Lual Mirales: “Year after year, the United States embargo is unjustifiable, cuba should not give in to such oppression, and it is not fair that a new generation of Cubans should continue to live in war.”
After the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the United States Government adopted a hostile policy towards Cuba. In 1961, the two countries broke off diplomatic relations.
In 1962, the United States imposed an economic, financial embargo and trade embargo against Cuba. Diplomatic relations were restored in July 2015, but the United States did not fully lift the embargo against Cuba.
After the Trump administration took office in 2017, the U.S. tightened its policy toward Cuba again. The Biden administration, while saying it was evaluating its policy toward Cuba, did not specify whether changes would be made.
