April 22 U.S. Secretary of State John Blinken said Tuesday that the United States will provide an additional $300 million in civil assistance to Afghanistan by 2021.
“We are working with Congress to provide $300 million in additional civilian assistance to Afghanistan through the State Department and usaID in 2021,” Blinken said in a statement Tuesday. ”
Blinken said the money will be used to promote economic growth in Afghanistan, fight corruption and drug trafficking, improve health care and support women’s rights.
Blinken said the aid would “demonstrate our enduring support for the Afghan people.” “With the withdrawal of U.S. troops, we will use civilian and economic assistance to promote a just peace in Afghanistan.”
U.S. President Joe Biden has previously announced that he will begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan on May 1 and complete the withdrawal on September 11.
