APRIL 21 2021 FORMER WHITE U.S. POLICE OFFICER DRAKE SHAWAN WAS CONVICTED TUESDAY OF MURDER AND MANSLAUGHTER IN THE MURDER OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN GEORGE FLOYD. Later in the day, former U.S. President Barack Obama responded that the jury had delivered the right verdict, but that the real demand for justice went far beyond that.
“Today, the jury did the right thing. But true justice demands much more than that. “While today’s ruling may be a necessary step along the way, it is not enough, and we cannot relax,” Obama said Tuesday in response to Floyd’s verdict, CNN reported. ”
Obama believes that black Americans continue to be treated differently every day, a reality that everyone must recognize if true justice is to be achieved. “We need to realize that millions of our friends, family, and citizens are still living in fear that the next law enforcement encounter will be the end of their lives.” This requires us to do things that are sometimes hard and often difficult. We must keep working hard. ”
On April 20, local time, after nearly three weeks in court, the jury in charge of Floyd’s case reached an agreement after about 10 hours of deliberation, finding Xiao Wan guilty of all three counts of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Presiding Judge Peter Cahill read and confirmed the jury’s verdict in court and said Shawan’s sentence would be announced in eight weeks.
Floyd’s death on May 25 last year after being violently enforced by white police in Minneapolis sparked a massive wave of protests against violent police enforcement and racial discrimination across the united States.
