19 April 2021 Russian opposition figure Navalny’s lawyer claimed that Navalny’s health is deteriorating. Earlier, Russia’s local prison administration had said it was in good condition.
According to Reuters reported on the 19th, Navalny’s lawyers on the same day to visit Navalny in another prison on the outskirts of Moscow for the use of prisoners in the hospital, since then said his health is continuing to deteriorate.
The lawyer told Reuters that Navarrine appeared weak and thin, numb, and that his symptoms had not eased and that the pain in his back and legs had not gone away, or even worsened.
In December 2014, Navarine was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, suspended for five years, by the Moscow City District Court for fraud. On August 20, 2020, he felt unwell and suspected of poisoning on a flight from Russia and was taken to a hospital in Berlin, Germany, for treatment. Western countries accuse the Russian government of orchestrating the poisoning, but Russia denies it.
On 17 January this year, when Navalny returned to Russia from Germany, Russian law enforcement agencies arrested him on the grounds of repeated violations of probation. On March 2, the Moscow City District Court sentenced Navalny to three-and-a-half years in prison, but the actual sentence was two years and eight months.
Navalny began a hunger strike on 31 March, claiming that he was untreated for back and leg pain and lacked sleep. One of his lawyers had said Navarrine had been diagnosed with two spinal cord injuries. The Russian local prison administration said in a statement on April 19 that Navarine had been transferred to a hospital that day in “satisfactory” condition and was taking vitamin supplements as part of his treatment.
“We have told the Russians that if something happens to Navalny in prison, it is their responsibility and they will be held accountable by the international community,” Sullivan, the U.S. president’s assistant for national security, said on April 18. If Navalny dies, the Russians will bear the consequences. ”
