Following the announcement of the formation of the Government of National Unity by the Representative Committee of the Federal Parliament of Myanmar on April 16, the Minister of Defence of the Government, Wu Yemeng, said at an online press conference on the evening of the 16th that the People’s Defence Force (PDF) would be formed as soon as possible, and that the People’s Defence Force would become the predecessor of the Federal Army.
He also said the army would be formed through a series of important political negotiations and agreements. And as the predecessors of the Federal Army, they will build the People’s Defence Force into a real, professional army led by the Government of National Unity.
Wu Yemeng, a lawmaker from the Thanlyin constituency in Yangon province, was appointed defence minister by Myanmar’s national unity government.
The Parliamentary Representative Committee of the Federal Parliament of Myanmar was set up spontaneously on 5 February this year by a number of NLD members who won the country’s general election in 2020.
On 21 March, the Myanmar National Governing Council declared it an illegal organization.
