Yemeni Houthi spokesman Yahya announced on the 11th that the armed forces used two drones to attack King Khalid Air Force Base and Jizan Airport in southern Saudi Arabia that day. Yahya said that the attack was a retaliatory measure against the bombing of Yemen by the Saudi-led multinational coalition.
The multinational coalition command issued a notice on the same day that the coalition had earlier shot down a drone carrying explosives. The announcement revealed that the drone was shot down on the way to Saudi Gizan. However, the circular does not indicate whether the incident caused casualties and other losses. The multinational coalition accused the Houthis of continuing to use drones to attack civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, saying that they would take all necessary countermeasures.
In 2014, Houthi forces captured the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, and the Yemeni government retreated to the south. In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and other countries intervened to support the Yemeni government in combating Houthis. Since then, Houthi forces have continuously attacked targets in Saudi Arabia with missiles and drones.
