Starting from 13:00 local time on April 10, about a thousand people in Romania took to the streets, held high the anti-government flag and shouted “freedom” to resist the government’s epidemic prevention measures.
Bucharest, the capital, has the largest number of protests, spread in front of the University Square, Victory Square and the Kotrocheni Palace. According to Romanian state television, people gathered again after a week of suspension, in connection with the transformation of Foisor specialized hospital into a designated hospital for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
On April 9, the largest specialized hospital in Romania, the Orthopedic Hospital of Foiso Bucharest, urgently evacuated existing patients. The beds were used to treat patients with COVID-19, and some patients in the hospital had just undergone orthopaedic surgery hours ago.
Alfat, head of the Romanian crisis, explained that the Ministry of Health had to make such a decision because of the worsening of the coronavirus epidemic in the capital Bucharest and the extreme strain of hospital beds. But this move aroused public dissatisfaction.
It is reported that Saturday’s protest march was allowed to last until 19:30 local time.
