India’s Business Standard reported on January 28 that the federal cabinet of India has paved the way for the privatization policy of state-owned enterprises (PSUs) and is expected to announce specific details in the federal budget submitted on February 1.
Two government officials familiar with the matter said that the policy would develop a road map for the presence of government-owned entities in strategic and non-strategic sectors, which was discussed and approved at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The policy is reportedly part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat series of plans announced in May 2020 by Indian Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman.
This includes opening all sectors to the private sector.
