January 10th, local time, the Associated Press reported that a man shot seven people, three of whom were killed and four seriously injured in about four hours from the South Side of Chicago.
The man was finally shot dead in a gun battle with the police in a parking lot north of Chicago.
The gunman is reported to be Jason Nandenger, 32 years old, and investigators are still determining the motive for the shooting.
Chicago Police Commissioner David Brown said that the man first shot and killed a 30-year-old University of Chicago student on the afternoon of the 9th when he was hit in the head and died in the car in the parking lot near Hyde Park.
Subsequently, the man “randomly” walked into an apartment building a block away, shot and killed a 46-year-old security guard and hit a woman who was picking up the mail.
Nandenger then shot and killed a 20-year-old man in a convenience store and hit an 81-year-old woman in the head and neck, who is currently being rescued.
After leaving the store, Nandenger hit a 15-year-old girl sitting in the car with her mother, who is currently being rescued, according to Director Brown.
Nandengall then traveled 10 miles (16 km) north to Evanston, a bordering Chicago, and broke into a convenience pharmacy, announcing that he was going to carry out a robbery but did not shoot anyone.
Then he crossed the street to a restaurant and shot a woman.
Evanston Sheriff Cook said that Nandenger was shot dead in a gun battle after leaving the restaurant and confronted the police in the parking lot.
Director Brown said investigators have not yet received more information about Nandengar, but plans to release more details when the information is available.
