Kyodo News Agency reported on January 5 that the number of newly diagnosed COVID-19 infections in Japan on the 5th reached 4,909, a single-day high.
Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa in the capital circle all set new records, while Tokyo is the second largest so far. The total number of people in these three counties is more than 2,500, accounting for more than half of the country.
A total of 69 confirmed deaths in Japan on the same day were also a new high, including 14 in Tokyo, 10 in Hyogo, 7 in Aichi, 6 in Saitama and 6 in Kanagawa.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 771 severe cases, an increase of 40 from yesterday, also set a new high.
