According to India Today on the 5th, Assam police found a 200-meter-long tunnel connecting India and Bangladesh in Karimganj district of the state on Monday.
Karimganj district is located in the southern part of Assam, with a 92-kilometer border with Bangladesh.
Officials suspect that the hidden tunnel has been used for illegal infiltration, smuggling and other illegal activities.
The tunnel was discovered during the investigation of a kidnapping case.
In investigating the case, Karimganj police found a hidden passage in the dense forest below the international border.
On December 28, the Karimganj District Police Department reportedly submitted a report on the matter.
In the case file, the plaintiff claimed that a 27-year-old man named Dilova Hussein was kidnapped and sent to Bangladesh.
Three people involved in the case were arrested and led the police into the hidden tunnel under the India-Mongolian border.
The Karimganj district sheriff said that the arrested took the investigators to the tunnel used for infiltration.
He said: “In fact, this tunnel is a concrete pipe, which is placed under the border fence for drainage. It has been used by the Border Security Forces (BSF).
The arrested also revealed that they had gone to Bangladesh through this underground passage and then returned to India. We are investigating.”
In May 2018, a similar tunnel was found in Karimganj district of Assam during the investigation of a cattle smuggling case.
