United Nations Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement through a spokesman on December 28 local time, welcoming the holding of the presidential and legislative elections on December 27 and commending the peaceful voting held by the government and people of the country.
Guterres commended the efforts of the Niger Security and Defence Forces to provide a secure environment on election day, and called on all political actors and their supporters to maintain a peaceful environment and resolve any disputes that may arise through dialogue and established legal mechanisms.
Guterres reiterated that the United Nations will continue to support the people and government of Niger in their efforts to further consolidate democracy and sustainable development in the country.
