According to the agreement, a Canadian astronaut will participate in the planned Artemis II lunar orbit mission in 2023. This will be the first manned space mission to the moon launched by the United States since 1972.
Canadian officials said that this would also make Canada the second country with astronauts entering deep space and orbiting the moon. According to the agreement, Canadian astronauts will also participate in a future mission to the lunar “gateway” space station.
Canada will also undertake the research and development and construction of the robotic arm, the Canadian Arm 3, for the lunar portal space station. This is an intelligent robot system for maintaining the space station and providing assistance to astronauts on spacewalks, etc.
Since the early 1980s, Canada has entered space 17 times with nine astronauts, including the current Governor-General of Canada, Julie Payette, who has made two flights to space.
According to NASA’s “Artimes” lunar landing program, in November 2021, the “Artimes I” launch mission will be carried out in November to collect data and assess spacecraft performance; in 2023, “Artimes II” will be manned around the moon; and “Artimes III” in 2024 Then astronauts will land on the moon again.
