Kyodo News Agency reported on December 13 that Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Mogi, who is visiting Africa, held talks with Prime Minister Jagnut of the Indian Ocean island country of Mauritius on the 13th.
The two held consultations on follow-up assistance for the fuel spill accident of Japanese freighters and agreed to work together to realize Japan’s concept of “free and open Indo-Pacific”.
The two sides signed an exchange of letters for Japan to provide disaster prevention-related materials and equipment worth about 600 million yen (about $6.2 million) free of charge.
Around the accident, Mogi held a telephone meeting with Jagnut in September, expressing his intention to prevent recurrence, assist mangrove regeneration and fishermen to restore their livelihoods.
Japan also sent an expert investigation mission.
Mogi also held talks with Mauritian Foreign Minister Boda, and visited the scene of the accident after that. Mauritius is the last stop of its trip to Africa and will return home on the 14th.
