LONDON, December 9 China has lifted more than 700 million people out of poverty. “It accounts for about 10% of the world’s total population, which is the biggest global success in the field of poverty alleviation in the past 40 years.”
Jim O’Neill, chairman of the Royal Institute of International Studies and a famous economist, recently accepted.
O’Neill served as Goldman Sachs’ chief economist and chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management Company, and Secretary of Commerce of the British Treasury. In 2001, he first proposed the concept of “BRIC” and predicted that the BRICS countries’ share of the global economy would rise significantly, known as the “father of BRICS”.
O’Neill said that China’s strong economic growth over the past 40 years has been critical to its achievements in poverty alleviation. From the perspective of economic and social development, industrialization, urbanization, integration into the global trading system, and putting poverty alleviation in a prominent position in governance may jointly contribute to China’s poverty alleviation achievements.
He believes that if China’s successful experience can be replicated in countries with large numbers of poor people, the results will be appreciated. The long-term rule of the Communist Party of China and China’s industrialization process have provided guarantees for China’s poverty alleviation.
O’Neill said that there are still many places in the world today, including southern India, Africa and parts of the Americas, which is a common challenge facing mankind, and poverty alleviation requires international cooperation.
He said : “More countries are lifted out of poverty and prosper through international trade and increased consumer spending, which will benefit not only their own people, but also for everyone else.”
