Shaposhnikov was born in 1942. He served as the commander of the Soviet Air Force from July 1990 to August 1991. From August 23 to December 26, 1991, Shaposhnikov served as the Soviet Defense Minister.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Shaposhnikov successively served as the Provisional Commander-in-Chief of the CIS Armed Forces, the representative of the Russian President’s Import and Export Company for Arms and Military Equipment in Russia, the Chief Executive Officer of Aeroflot and the Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation.
