Yonhap news on December 7th, South Korean Foreign Ministry officials said on the 7th that the sewage information available to the South Korean government about Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant is still not enough to judge whether Japan’s sewage treatment plan is safe.
The person said that the South Korean government is consulting with the Japanese government, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and neighboring countries, and asking Japan to provide information on how to discharge sewage and whether the sewage discharge plan is strictly implemented.
It is reported that the method and time of discharge wastewater in Japan have not yet been determined. At present, Japan is likely to choose the way to discharge nuclear sewage into the sea. It is expected that the water tanks in the nuclear power plant may be fully stored in the summer of 2022, so Japan decided to discharge sewage into the sea.
In addition, the Japanese Embassy in South Korea held a briefing to the South Korean media last month, saying that according to international practice, wastewater generated by power generation is naturally discharged to the sea, and South Korea’s Yuecheng Nuclear Power Plant also uses this method.
In response, South Korean Foreign Ministry officials pointed out that the sewage treatment plan of the Fukushima nuclear power plant has not been determined, and its safety cannot be compared with that of the Korean nuclear power plant.
