Lebanese President Michelle Awn said on the 2nd that Lebanon is currently in multiple crises, and he appealed to the international community to help Lebanon.
The second International Conference on Assistance to Lebanon was held by video on the 2nd. United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, French President Macron and leaders of 30 other countries attended the meeting.
Awn said at the meeting that Lebanon is currently in multiple crises. The country’s economy is in trouble, and the bombing in the Beirut port area and the coronavirus epidemic have made the lives of the Lebanese people worse. He appealed to the international community to help Lebanon.
Aun said that the formation of a new government is Lebanon’s top priority. The new government is faced with difficult tasks such as planning reforms and proposing economic recovery policies. He said that he would lead the country out of trouble at all costs.
On August 4 this year, a violent explosion occurred in the port area of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, killing at least 190 people, injuring more than 6,500 people, and leaving about 300,000 people homeless. Since then, the international community has provided assistance to Lebanon. At the initiative of France and the United Nations, the first International Conference on Assistance to Lebanon was held by video on August 9.
On August 10, the then Prime Minister of Lebanon, Hassan Diab, announced the collective resignation of the government. On October 22, President Aun appointed former Prime Minister Saad Hariri as the new Prime Minister of the government and authorized him to form a cabinet. Due to disputes over the selection of government members, the formation of a new government has not been completed.
