According to several U.S. media local time on the 7th, Boeing has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to close the criminal charges of the U.S. Department of Justice.

The U.S. Department of Justice alleged that Boeing chose to be “profit rather than honest” and concealed information about the design of Boeing’s 737 MAX series aircraft from security officials, which hindered supervision of the aircraft involved in two fatal air crashes.

Of the $2.5 billion that Boeing agreed to pay, about $500 million will be donated to the families of the 346 people killed in two tragedies.

Lion Indonesia and Ethiopian Airlines crashed a Boeing 737 MAX in October 2018 and March 2019, respectively, killing a total of 346 people. Subsequently, countries have grounded 737 MAX series passenger planes.
